Spring Rhododendron Care

rhododendron-care

Rhododendrons may be showing the effects of the harsh winter. Though unsightly, the brown foliage and damaged buds do not necessarily mean the branches are dead. If the plant is healthy, new foliage will form after normal bloom time, and the old foliage will drop. So have patience and see what happens.

Remember that this damage indicates that the rhody was exposed to harsh sun, wind and very low temperatures. Fertilization with a slow release, natural formula such as Espoma Holly-Tone is recommended now.

Try to keep the stress factors such as drought and insect damage in check in the coming months. Remember to treat these shrubs with an anti-dessicant or wrap with burlap late in the fall. Don't worry, we'll remind you!
